DEbate V.: “1989 – 30 Years Later”

English Language Debate Competition for High School Students

The Institute of English and American Studies of the University of Debrecen and the US Embassy Budapest are happy to announce the fifth annual, national, English language debate competition for high school students. This year’s contest is organized in commemoration of the historical events of 1989.

By submitting a project online by September 20, 2019, students can apply in teams of three under the supervision of a teacher. They can submit creative projects (videos, music, poems, essays, presentations, interviews, etc.) on the topic “1989 – 30 Years Later,” in which they address the regime change in the Hungarian cultural and historical imaginary. The participants of the debate competition will be selected based on their projects.

To register for the competition, send your team’s project to debatedebrecen@gmail.com and also register your team at: http://debate.unideb.hu/regisztracio/

The teams submitting the most creative projects will get the chance to prove their debating skills in national semi-finals and the grand finals in Budapest at the end of 2019. Semi-finals will take place during October and November 2019 at the American Corners in Debrecen, Pécs, Szeged, and Veszprém and the grand finals will take place in December in Budapest.

The teams will debate each other on issues related to the spirit and events of 1989. The debates follow the Karl Popper format.
